Configuring Outlook Express 6 for Windows

  1. Launch Outlook Express
  2. Choose whether or not to make it the default client on the PC
  3. On the Toolbar, click Tools, then click Accounts from the menu.
  4. The Internet Accounts window opens.
  5. Near the top-right corner, click Add, then click Mail from the menu.
  6. The Internet Connection Wizard launches.
  7. In the Display name field, type your name or the name people will see when they receive mail from you.
  8. Click Next to continue.
  9. Type your complete simplepc.net email address into the E-mail address section.
  10. Click Next to continue.
  11. My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
  12. Type pop.gmail.com in the Incoming mail server section.
  13. Type smtp.gmail.com into the Outgoing mail server section.
  14. Click Next to continue.
  15. Type the username of the email account (including @simplepc.net) in the Account name section.
  16. Type the password to your email account in the Password section.
    Note: Passwords are case-sensitive. Ensure Caps Lock is disabled.
  17. Click the Remember password box.
    Note: Do NOT select Log on using ‘Secure Password Authentication’.
  18. Click Next to continue.
  19. Click Finish to complete the wizard
    Note: SMTP authentication must be enabled and port settings entered before mail can be sent or received.
  20. The Internet Accounts window appears.
  21. Highlight the desired account and click Properties.
  22. Type an account name in the box under Mail Account.
    Note:
    Ensure “include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing” is checked.
  23. Select the Servers tab.
  24. Verify all information previously entered is correct.
  25. Check the box labeled My server requires authentication.
    Note: SMTP authentication is required to send email. Without this enabled, you cannot send email. SMTP authentication helps deter would-be spammers from spamming you. Ensure the box has a checkmark inside before continuing.
  26. Click the Advanced tab.
  27. Click BOTH boxes labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  28. Type port number 465 into the box to the right of Outgoing mail (SMTP).
  29. Type port number 995 into the box to the right of Incoming mail (POP3).
  30. Click OK.
  31. The newly created account is displayed. Refer to this account here if Outlook information needs editing in the future.
  32. Click Close.
